Bush’s anti-abortion policy has deadly implications for the women–most of whom live in Third World countries–who currently benefit from the programs and services provided by U.S. family-planning agencies. These organizations do much more than just abortion-related activities. They establish and put programs into place that help curtail the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, seek to improve the quality of reproductive health-care provided and, perhaps most significantly, increase access to family-planning services so women won’t have to resort to abortion in the first place.
Bush’s restrictive policy jeopardizes these services. This, in turn, endangers the lives of millions of women who would not otherwise have access to quality family planning and reproductive health services.
He is placing domestic politics ahead of human lives.
