Chicago’s voluminous zoning code and a detailed zoning map of the city now are posted on the Internet, saving a trip to the library or purchase of a $125 bound version, officials announced Friday.

The online presentation meets one of the first goals of the Mayor’s Zoning Reform Commission, a 21-member panel named last year by Mayor Richard Daley, to make the code more accessible and understandable to the public.

On another front, the commission has been holding public hearings as it prepares to rewrite the code, now more than 40 years old and considered outdated.

“In this era of booming redevelopment in Chicago, it is important for citizens to know what kind of projects can be built in their neighborhoods,” said Ald. William J.P. Banks (36th), co-chairman of the commission. “This tool will help provide citizens a greater understanding of what kind of zoning is around them.”

The code and maps can be seen at cityofchicago.org/mayor/zoning.
