In your Jan. 22 sports feature, Cubs pitching prospect Ben Christensen continued to reveal his apparently deficient character.
Christensen, you may recall, is the former Wichita State University pitcher who drilled Evansville’s Anthony Molina in the face with a warmup pitch in April 1999. Molina was standing 24 feet from home plate at the time. Molina sustained “a fractured skull, glaucoma, retinal damage and blind spots in his field of vision.” Now comes Christensen, complaining he could put the incident behind him if the media would simply leave him alone, and conveying little apparent sympathy for Molina. He worries about “his side of the story being told.”
When Christensen threw a 90-m.p.h. pitch at the head of an unsuspecting and defenseless hitter in the on-deck circle, he acted in a manner totally devoid of sportsmanship and character. Rather than expressing contrition for this inexcusable act and concern for the victim he injured, Christensen’s comments were arrogant and self-centered. What makes him think any true baseball fan–or human being with a sense of decency–cares about his side of the story?
