In his inaugural address, President Bush said, “I will work to build a single nation of justice and opportunity.”

And yet on his first official workday, he did something that instead divided the nation yet again: He banned federal funding for groups that provide abortion counseling or services overseas.

So, instead of being the president for everyone, as he previously promised in speeches after his much-contested victory was finally assured by the U.S. Supreme Court, he chose to make a move that would again polarize the nation over the most divisive issue of the day–abortion.

This does not bode well for the next four years.
