Surprisingly enough, there is much to see and do at Volo Bog State Natural Area — even in winter. Here are some free activities on the schedule.

Guided tours of Volo Bog continue through the winter at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Deer, rabbit, mink, fox and coyote tracks often can be spotted in the snow at the pond in the bog’s center while northern birds sing their winter songs in the surrounding vegetation. Reservations are not required for individuals or small groups, but groups of 10 or more must make reservations.

If you prefer indoor activities, an environmental reading group meets the first Thursday of the month from 7-8:30 p.m. in Volo Bog’s reference library. Selections range from classic to contemporary and are selected by those in attendance. The selection for Thursday is “Wandering Through Winter” by Edwin Way Teale. Reservations are required.

Get the poop on animals by what they leave behind while taking a scatology hike with Volo Bog naturalist Stacy Miller. Ages 6 to adult are welcome. Reservations are required.

If you think winter is for the birds, you can join a winter bird walk at Volo Bog from 9 a.m.-noon on Feb. 18 with volunteer naturalist Randy Schietzelt. This tour features year-round resident birds and species that migrate to Illinois for the state’s balmy winter climate. Bare trees for easier viewing and fewer species make the event beginner-friendly.

Ages 6 and older are welcome. Reservations are required.

Volo Bog State Natural Area is located in Ingleside, Ill., west of U.S. Highway 12, between Illinois Highways 120 and 134. Call 815-344-1294 for more information on these events or to make reservations.
