I was one of those Inauguration-Day “patriots” Wes Polender of Lithia Springs, Ga., (Voice of the people, Jan. 25) implied was hurting America’s overseas image. I drove 15 hours from Naperville to Washington, D.C., on Jan. 19 and home again Jan. 21 to do nothing but make known by my presence on Jan. 20 that something had gone wrong.

My spirits were uplifted as I joined thousands of others–at DuPont Circle, on the steps of the Supreme Court and along the Inaugural Parade route–who had come from all corners of the United States because they felt the same.

Among the many images I will carry with me from that day was that of the man who, as protest swirled below him, stood motionless on the steps of the Supreme Court holding a sign that said simply “Crime Scene.” Did we succeed in showing the world “a country divided”? I certainly hope so.
