State officials next month will begin taking DNA samples from incarcerated felons to add to the state’s database of genetic samples.

A team of technicians will begin visiting prisons in February to take samples by swiping inmates’ inner cheeks using long-handled cotton swabs, said Mike Roberts, administrator of the division of management services for the state Department of Justice. The estimated 22,000 samples will be broken down into individual gene profiles to be compared to genetic material found at past and future unsolved crime scenes nationwide.
