This is in response to “New power source: Got your whale oil lamp ready?” (Commentary, Jan. 29). It concerns Dennis Byrne’s comment that hydroelectric power is “benign.” I wish writers would learn a little basic ecology before making such statements.
Dams are never benign to a riparian ecosystem. The cost to wildlife is huge; the disturbing of the flow of water and the creation of an unnatural reservoir change forever the way a river “works.”
Of course if no other living things have any rights, then I guess it’s OK to dam away.
Another question for Mr. Byrne: Where do you want to store spent nuclear waste (and brittle reactors, themselves, when they become too old to continue on line!)?
