When will we see President Bush fulfill his promise to unite the nation? So far everything about his presidency has been split along party lines. Having lost the popular vote, he only questionably won the electoral vote thanks to a divided Supreme Court.

John Ashcroft, his choice for attorney general, was confirmed by an almost strictly partisan vote in the Senate.

Within his first month in office, Bush has taken an extreme right-wing stand on abortion, alienating more than half the electorate. His choice for interior secretary, Gale Norton, has a strong anti-environment bias. In fact, most of his Cabinet, despite a veneer of diversity, are solidly far right wing in philosophy.

Where in all of this is his promise to unite the nation? All I see are actions that are bound to divide us further.
