Bernice S. Lewis, 92, of Arlington Heights had an adventurous spirit that took her around the world. A former resident of Chicago’s Edison Park neighborhood, Mrs. Lewis died Tuesday, Jan. 30, in The Moorings in Arlington Heights. Born in Chicago and a graduate of Schurz High School, Mrs. Lewis attended several colleges, including the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the University of Colorado in Boulder. Mrs. Lewis worked as a secretary in the 1930s until the early 1940s, when she raised her family. She also worked as a demonstrator of Dictaphones at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Mrs. Lewis also had a passion for the stage and during the 1940s and 1950s she performed by reading poetry or scripts. “She had committed to memory dozens of pieces,” said her son Kenneth. Other survivors include another son, Reid, and a granddaughter. A visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Edison Park United Methodist Church, 6740 N. Oliphant Ave., Chicago. A memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. in the church.
