I was pleased to see E.A. Torriero’s “Popularity boom speaks volumes about libraries” (Page 1, Jan. 29) about the boom in library buildings.
As the director of a library in a rapidly growing suburb (New Lenox), I am familiar with growth.
But I would like to take issue with the statement that libraries have “hefty budgets from annual tax rolls.”
That is not the case.
Libraries make up one of the smallest portions of a property tax bill.
Passing a building bond referendum only provides funds for construction, not an increase in operating funds.
It is important to note that while new buildings are required to meet the needs of a growing community, it is the services going on inside those buildings that matter most.
And those services must be adequately funded.
