JoAnn Jared Ryan, 65, a retired bookstore manager and a noted Democratic Party activist, died of complications from lung cancer Saturday, Feb. 3, in her Wheaton home. Born in Plant City, Fla., Mrs. Ryan was a longtime Democrat and a campaign worker for George McGovern’s 1972 run for president. Her work in retail bookstores spanned three decades and included stints at College of DuPage bookstore, Poor Richard’s Bookstore in Wheaton, B. Dalton Bookstores and Barnes & Noble. Mrs. Ryan also was an advocate for affordable housing in Wheaton, an interest that prompted her to join the Wheaton Housing Commission in the 1970s. She also was an election judge. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Ryan; four sons, Tom, Mark, David and Patrick; four grandchildren; her mother Mary Jared; a brother, John; and a sister, Betty. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
