Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The worst organized and yet funniest award shows I have ever attended was the Chicago Music Awards of 1998. Several of the designated presenters were locked out of the building and others were no longer alive. It was utter chaos but, thanks to the quick wit of emcee Damon Williams and a patient audience, it was not a total disaster. This year’s show happens Saturday at the Congress Plaza Hotel featuring performances and awards presentations for Chicago’s top purveyors of gospel, rap, country, Latin, polka, classical and even comedy. To give you an idea of the show’s eclecticism, consider this year’s best songwriter category, which pits the folky Robbie Fulks against rapper DaBrat. Who will win? You’ll have to cough up $25 to find out. The show begins at 8 p.m. The hotel is at 520 S. Michigan Ave. 312-427-0266.
