Howard M. Allen, 74, of Naperville, an active community member and former educator, died Sunday, Feb. 4, in Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born in North Fond du Lac, Wis. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from North Central College and received a master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University. Mr. Allen was teacher for Lisle Elementary School, the Mooseheart children’s home and the Naperville school district, and he was principal at Highlands Elementary School in Naperville from 1962 to 1984. He later drove a special education bus for seven years, retiring in 1991. Mr. Howard enjoyed sports and volunteered at high school athletic events for 25 years. He was a member of the North Central College Alumni Board, where he served on its Barn Building Committee in the early 1980s. Mr. Allen was an active member since 1951 of Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville, where he served on various committees and was head usher for many years. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; a son, Dick; two daughters, Mary Beth Lamer and Sherri; a sister, Jane Resheske; and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Grace United Methodist Church, 300 E. Gartner Rd., Naperville.
