Two weeks ago, one of my freshmen students at Wheaton Warrenville South High School asked me to write a letter of recommendation for the Boy Scouts Eagle Scout honor.
As I read the provided form, they asked me if he “treated all people equally, with respect and kindness,” and they asked if he was “morally straight.”
As I considered this exemplary student for the honor, I struggled with only one issue: How do I recommend a student for an award when the sponsoring organization does not follow its own creed? There is nothing equal, respectful, kind or morally straight about the Boy Scouts’ ban on homosexuality. I am angry, disturbed and extremely saddened that the honor my student should be receiving is tarnished by such ignorance.
