This is regarding Salim Muwakkil’s “Why American blacks deserve reparations” (Commentary, Feb. 5). If slavery were a more current issue (i.e. there were some slaves still living today), I could possibly understand them receiving reparations.
But once the issue becomes multiple generations removed, it becomes ridiculous to even consider it.
At some point in history, everyone’s ancestors were either enslaved, killed, discriminated against or otherwise persecuted.
If taken to its logical conclusion, everyone should be receiving a check from some government.
The very concept is ludicrous, not to mention the logistical impossibilities involved in carrying it out.
The fact that this is even being seriously discussed illustrates how far down the road of political correctness this country has traveled.
I’m sure that this idea was the brainchild of a lawyer somewhere.
It is ambulance-chasing taken to its extreme.
Yes, Salim, I think that after about 135 years, it is time to “get over it.”
