It may be hard for Mitchell May to survive without a car in Chicago, as he wrote in “Freed from the tyranny of the auto” (Perspective, Feb. 4).
But at least he has the CTA buses and elevated trains to rely on.
In many of Chicago’s suburbs the only usable form of alternative transportation is a Pace bus, which runs just twice daily to a few places.
Limited bus service is not a fact of life for all suburban Americans, though. For instance, in the Denver-Boulder metro area the RTD (Regional Transportation District) buses go frequently to many varied destinations.
Our current transportation system is having a negative effect on the biosphere.
An improved bus system that includes the suburbs would reduce this negative effect.
