After years entertaining tourists with soccer matches and orchestral performances, four Thai elephants are to have a break and get married.

As Valentine’s Day falls during the annual mating period for Thai elephants, the head of a provincial elephant club has decided to hold a wedding for two elephant couples at his camp.

“Now it is mating season, and I think we should organize a wedding for them on Valentine’s Day, so they can live well and produce well,” said Sompast Meepan, head of the Ayutthaya Elephant Club.

Sompast said the wedding, would feature a traditional welcoming ceremony for male elephants, which are hired to mate with female elephants.
