Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Mega Man 64 ($50, N64) has all the elements of a great 3-D action adventure game. It has lots of weapons, a good storyline, mean-spirited bosses — and Mega Man, one of the coolest heroes of any game. So why does Mega Man 64 fail miserably?

The biggest problem with the game is the clumsy controls. Games such as Banjo-Tooie have raised the bar on the quality of control gamers expect, and Mega Man 64 falls well below the acceptable level. Sadly, the most challenging part of this game is just maneuvering Mega Man through the screens.

Visually, too, the game is uninspiring. The graphics and animation are dull and outdated. Even Mega Man doesn’t look very interesting.

Add to these problems other drawbacks, like no target lock-on and mediocre audio, and you’re in for a frustrating gaming experience. This is Mega Man’s first title on the Nintendo 64 console and easily the worst game of the series.

Huge fans of Mega Man still may want to rent this game but should not waste their money buying this title. If you are looking for new Mega Man adventure, instead check out Mega Man Xtreme ($25) on the Game Boy Color. You’ll enjoy the platform style of gaming that made Mega Man so popular.
