Marie H. Pope, 81, of Arlington Heights, a homemaker, was a former resident of Prospect Heights. Mrs. Pope, a Chicago native, died Saturday, Feb. 10, in Lutheran Home for the Aged, Arlington Heights. Mrs. Pope, an active member of First United Methodist Church, Arlington Heights, was a co-founder in the late 1970s of Women Folk, a singing group there. “She played the piano and taught herself to play guitar,” said her daughter, Virginia. “She and a group of other women started playing for church services. She played guitar and sang. She was an accomplished classical pianist. She never went to college but she was well-read. She was active with the League of Women Voters helping to try to get the [Equal Rights Amendment] passed.” Other survivors include a son, George D.; a sister, Vivian Harding; and three granddaughters. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, when a service will begin in the St. John Chapel of Lutheran Home for the Aged, 800 W. Oakton St., Arlington Heights.
