The sinking of the Japanese fishing trawler Ehime Maru by the USS Greeneville, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, was a horrible tragedy, both because of the loss of life and the senselessness of it.

Just whom exactly do U.S. submarines need to attack anymore? The incident shows, yet again, the cost of America maintaining a military presence around the world.

Who pays those costs? U.S. taxpayers, who shell out more than $300 billiona year to the Pentagon–money that would be better spent on education, health care, affordable housing and environmental protection here at home–certainly pay dearly.

The people of Japan, Iraq, Cuba, Yugoslavia and countless other lands pay the ultimate price of U.S. militarism–with their lives.
