William Neikirk writes in “Shooting may forestall efforts to reopen Pennsylvania Avenue to public” (News, Feb. 8) that “the actions of suspect Robert Pickett, 47, may discourage efforts to reopen Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.”

Let me be sure I understand this. Because a pedestrian used a gun in a threatening manner near the White House, people are saying that Pennsylvania Avenue needs to be closed to everybody except pedestrians?
