Melania Klafta, 91, of Schaumburg, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. Mrs. Klafta, a Chicago native, was a former resident of Palatine. “She went through the Depression. She went through the war [World War II],” said her son-in-law Marty Leffner. “That’s what tempered her when she looked at things around her. She never took for granted what we take for granted. It was always a luxury to her.” Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Orlando and Kathy Leffner; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home, followed by a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Theresa Catholic Church, 467 N. Benton St., Palatine.
