THE CLOTHES THEY STOOD UP IN

By Alan Bennett

Random House, 159 pages, $14.95

Playwright Alan Bennett, best known for “The Madness of King George” and his part in the satirical revue “Beyond the Fringe,” presents the tale of a dreary British couple who find their residence has been robbed, or “burgled,” after they return home from a night at the opera. Just the size of a large index card and weighing in at about 25,000 words, this beguiling book is more than a charming miniature–it’s brilliant. It was worth staying up all night to read.
