The Geneva City Council’s committee of the whole has approved implementation of the first phase of a plan to use a geographic information computer system to process and analyze geographical data for city needs such as planning and economic development, and electric, water, sewer, building and zoning and emergency services. The second and third phases would include additional software, hardware and data conversion.
The cost for Phase 1 is estimated at $21,000 for software and training. The total cost for the three phases is projected at nearly $100,000.
The committee also directed city staff to move forward with a project to install a fiber optic cable network to provide data and information services for the city, schools, Park District, library and, eventually, Geneva businesses. Officials said the cost for such a program would be more than $4 million.
