Dozens of law-enforcement officers, volunteers and relatives searched Tuesday for a 12-year-old Berrien County boy who vanished five days earlier while playing outside with his two dogs.

Steven Earl Kraft II left his Benton Heights home about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to play with the dogs, a German shepherd puppy and an adult German shepherd-chow mix, while his mother finished cooking dinner.

The boy’s father, Steven Kraft, said he and his wife, Chyrille Ganczak, didn’t worry when the boy missed dinner because he often visited his sister’s nearby home and played with her son.

Kraft, 39, started searching for his son about 9:30 p.m. after calling neighbors and relatives to see if the boy was with them. Ganczak telephoned the Benton Township Police Department to report the boy missing about 1 a.m. Friday.
