In “Bush recession” (Voice of the people, Feb. 18), reader Ellen Shockley writes, “During the Clinton administration, unemployment was at an all-time low. Less than two weeks into the Bush regime, tens of thousands of hardworking Americans were jobless.”
Like most faithful liberals, Ms. Shockley does not allow her opinion to be distorted by facts. In December, layoffs were announced by dozens of American companies, among them Boeing, TRW, Aetna, Dun & Bradstreet, Outboard Marine and Motorola. Of course, this does not include the thousands of dot-com workers whose Internet ventures failed this past year. Obviously, this was well before Mr. Bush became our president.
I am sure Ms. Shockley agrees layoffs are usually the effect of a previous economic cause, and most likely meant we are now feeling the effects of the previous administration’s non-existent economic policies.
