Ten graduating seniors enrolled at high schools in Lake County have been named candidates in the 2001 Presidential Scholars Program.

The 10 are among more than 2,600 seniors nationwide to be selected as candidates for the honor. A panel of 30 appointed by President Bush will select the winning scholars.

Winners will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education in May. They will include one male and one female from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and from among U.S. students living abroad.

Up to 20 students will also be chosen for accomplishment in creative and performing arts, and 15 students will be chosen at-large.

Presidential Scholar candidates from Lake County schools are Jonathan Marcus of Barrington Community High School; Albert Chu, Irena Foygel, Timothy Mckenzie and Bradley Klein of Stevenson; Albert Leung of Warren Township; Chad Clamage of Highland Park; Albert Sun of Lake Forest; and Samuel Jennings and Karen Lo of Libertyville.

Winners are selected based on superior academic and artistic achievement, leadership qualities, character, involvement in school and community activities, school recommendations and self-assessments. Winners will receive their Presidential Scholar medallions in a ceremony at the White House.
