Finding babies in dumpsters is a terrible tragedy (“Saving babies from the dumpster,” Editorial, Feb. 15).

The idea of a drop-off center at a hospital, fire station, or even an adoption center is literally a lifesaver. Babies would be placed in a safe place where they could be cared for and later placed for adoption. The mother would be “free” from her “burden.”

If the birth father’s rights are a concern, he should have already been in the picture, prior to the birth.

When a hospital or fire station is too far away, perhaps other volunteer “safe houses” could be available. Volunteers could be trained and instructed to contact the proper authorities if a baby is placed at their home anonymously.

So many people are waiting to adopt a child. With a program such as this, one woman’s burden is another family’s blessing.
