Newton C. Mead, M.D., 93, Sun City, Arizona, passed away February 16, 2001. Born 1907 in Newton, Pennsylvania. Predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Reindl Mead. Graduate of Maine Township High School, class fo 1925. Attended Antioch College and Northwestern University. Received M.D. degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1933. Served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, 12th General Hospital Unit, during WW II in the North African and Italian Campaigns. During his long medical career, he was Chief of Division of Orthopedic Surgery at Evanston Hospital, Associate Chief Surgeon of Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital, Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Northwestern Medical School, President of Chicago Orthopedic Society, President of Professional Staff at Evanston Hospital, Senior attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Evanston Hospital and the first surgeon at Evanston Hospital to remove a ruptured disc in the lumbar spine. Survived by sons, Newton C. Mead Jr. of Guilford, CT and Steven R. Mead of Alexandria, VA; a daughter, Mary Ann Mead of Robbinsdale, MN; a granddaughter, Jennifer Mead of Bellevue, WA; grandsons, Peter Mead of New York City and Jeffrey Mead also of New York City. Memorials in Dr. Mead’s name to the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014 would be appreciated by the family.
