Your heart has to go out to Frank Thomas. He’s guaranteed only $31,950,000 over four years for working from mid-February to early October each year. I know, I know, it’s all about “respect.”

I wonder what that means for the rest of us working people in real jobs. Does that mean Mr. Thomas has no respect for us, the people whose dollars move the turnstiles? After all, we are several layers of magnitude away from his current guarantee. It’s pretty clear that working conditions have become intolerable for ballplayers of Thomas’ thinking. I recall the comment several years ago of then-manager Tony La Russa after a White Sox double-header. La Russa complained that the ballplayers had to be in uniform for eight hours that day. The handwriting was on the wall then. An eight-hour workday is cruel, cruel, cruel.

But I am a baseball fan, so if I know the address I intend to send a little something to Thomas to help him along. I seem to recall reading that he bought a home in Oak Brook for several million dollars. Let’s see if I can find that mailing address.
