I knew Bob Hanssen when we were classmates working for our MBA degrees in 1971.

He struck me as a very bright, decent individual who was constantly searching for something beyond the ordinary career paths that most people were going to follow.

The last time I saw him was a chance encounter at O’Hare in the early 1970s, when he was wearing a police uniform.

I always wondered after that what would become of this talented, gifted individual who seemed to march to a different beat than the rest of his classmates.

Perhaps he wasn’t too different from the Steve McQueen character in “The Thomas Crown Affair,” the bored rich executive who robbed banks for the intellectual challenge.

For the sake of Bob’s family, I hope not.
