I feel that the politicians involved in the I-355 extension are more concerned about their personal gain than what is best for their communities.

The small number of people who would rely on the road to get to work is certainly a drop in the bucket compared with the amount of people using our present inadequate, antiquated roads.

We must not forget that Gov. George Ryan wants a third airport in Peotone. So, of course, he would then want to extend I-355 from New Lenox to Peotone.

We need to concentrate on what is best for the majority at the present time.

Most important, there is no money for I-355 or any of the other toll roads. If tolls are raised, the system will only get deeper in debt. The extension will not pay for itself, even with toll increases. I am very surprised that Downstate officials are not screaming about the possibility that state money will go to build a toll road that will in no way benefit them.

We need to concentrate on improving rail transportation. Large numbers of people now use trains every day to get to work. More would use them if there were increased parking available and accurate train schedules.

There are good road projects in the works right now that will not even be considered as alternatives. We must not let any funding be taken away from these projects. Besides, the alternative roads are much more conducive to a rural atmosphere. Yes, we are going to grow, but let’s consider smart growth.

Look at Orland Park now. Traffic is horrific, especially on the weekends. See what happens when the local roads are not improved before development occurs. I-355 will not help Orland at all.
