Paper Mario ($50, N64) looks like a living storybook: Mario and classic characters, such as Toad and the menacing Bowser, show up as two-dimensional characters in a 3-D environment. The effect is a cool, cut-out feel.

But don’t be fooled. Paper Mario is no cookie-cutter sequel. This role-playing game combines a rich story line, tricky puzzles and strategic turn-based battles.

The game’s object is to help Mario rescue Princess Peach, who was kidnapped by Bowser and held captive in her own castle. Gamers also get to play Princess Peach as she hunts for clues to help Mario.

As Mario progresses, he becomes stronger and more characters join him in his fight against Bowser. Almost all the characters from previous games appear, including the Boos, Shy Guys and Koopa Brothers. Players also revisit Mario’s old stomping grounds, like the desert world and Princess’ castle.

Mario fans will want to own this top-notch game. But don’t expect to breeze through it in a few days. There are tons of items to find and battles to be fought. Just consider it time well-spent.
