Paul S. Chiado, 70, an architect and engineer who worked in Chicago for more than 20 years, died Friday, Feb. 16, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Wash. Mr. Chiado left Chicago in 1977 and had lived for the past two decades on Mercer Island and in Bellevue, Wash. At the time of his retirement in 1994, Mr. Chiado oversaw design, development and construction projects for the Austin Co. as a vice president and general manager based in Renton, Wash. Before joining Austin, Mr. Chiado taught engineering at the University of Illinois and the University of Colorado. He also worked for several years at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and also managed his own practice. Born and raised in Albuquerque, Mr. Chiado received his architecture degree from the University of New Mexico, followed by a master’s in structural engineering. Later in his career, Mr. Chiado earned a business degree from the University of Chicago. Mr. Chiado was a retired lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Chiado is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sue; two daughters, Julie Schrag and Lisa Salkind; a son, Tom; two sisters, Sister Angela Marie and Angela; a brother, Thomas; and seven grandchildren. Services have been held.
