Dennis Byrne printed a letter from a mother describing the chaos in her children’s classroom (“A mother’s lament over bad behavior, `Disruption never seems to abate and learning is constantly impeded,'” Commentary, Feb. 26). I know such problems can occur, but I strongly believe that they’re the exception rather than the rule.
I know this because I’m an education student who has spent more than 50 hours observing students in seven junior high and high schools in both the suburbs and the city. In all that time I’ve never seen the level of disruptions mentioned in this letter.
