The identities of prison employees involved in executions would be kept secret under legislation that has passed the Indiana Senate.

Department of Correction officials sought the measure to prevent any threats against employees responsible for carrying out executions.

Prison officials were concerned that inmates could give the names of employees to friends outside the prison, who could then make threats.

Although the names of executioners are not currently protected by law, the prison would not release the names of employees who are scheduled to participate in Wednesday’s execution of convicted murderer Gerald Bivins by lethal injection.
