Within minutes of Michigan State’s 69-62 victory over Temple in the NCAA basketball South Regional title game at Atlanta, the Spartans hockey team beat Wisconsin 5-1 in Grand Rapids, Mich., for the NCAA West Regional championship.
It’s the second time in three years Michigan State has made the Final Four and Frozen Four in the same season. Archrival Michigan performed the same feat in 1993.
In 1999 both Spartans teams lost in the semifinals–the hockey team to New Hampshire and the basketball team to Duke.
CROWNING GLORY
Fenya Crown was a novelty when she ran her first marathon in Los Angeles 18 years ago. She was 70. On Sunday Crown completed the Rome Marathon in just under 7 1/2 hours.
“I say it’s my last one after every marathon,” she said.
