What a wonderful news story by Michael Martinez to make the front page (“School’s law team faces daily trials,” March 27)–an amazing story of achievement by students from a school more noted for underachievement.
Wells High School and its most special teacher, James Edwards, deserve front-page coverage for their accomplishments. For the past three years Wells has had teams named among the first-place finishers in a mock trial tournament organized by the Chicago Bar Association and the Cook County Circuit Court.
This in a school where 90 percent live at the poverty level and only 19 percent read at grade level.
They are front-page news and, even more, so is the teacher who motivated them–the amazing Edwards.
