I was dismayed by “Quebec law on French signs makes some people gag” (News, April 8). Though there are some problems with the coexistence of French and English in the province, the article made it seem like language extremists and terrorist bombings are the rule rather than the exception.

I recently traveled to Montreal. Many people spoke both languages and would courteously switch to the mother tongue of the people to whom they spoke.

The Tribune has done a real disservice to its readers by painting such an unbalanced portrait of Montreal and of Quebec as a whole.
