Everyone knows that the tax code is extremely and counterproductively complex. But only those taxpayers who prepare their own returns really feel the burden of this complexity. We spent 50 hours this year on ours, even with the aid of a computer program.
To combat this problem, top government officials–including all congressmen, senators and cabinet officers–should be required to fill out their own federal tax returns. This exercise might be accompanied by a published list of those requesting extensions. It could also include human-interest stories on officials whose firsthand experience with the code led to the repeated use of colorful words not usually found in newsletters to their constituents.
