CITY

a tavola **

2148 W. Chicago Ave.

773-276-7567

This cute 56-seat Italian, just eight blocks from the United Center, moved exactly one door east, acquiring a building with a slightly more spacious dining room and a private party room. What hasn’t changed is the compact menu of lovingly prepared dishes.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sat.

Entree prices: $16-$24

NEW Cannella’s on Grand **

1132 W. Grand Ave.,

312-433-9400

Veteran restaurateur Steve Cannella invested a year in cooking school to fine-tune his skills before opening this value-oriented West Side restaurant. Complimentary soup or salad with entrees, fresh fruit at meal’s end-your dollar goes far here.

Recommended: Radicchio alla Rosa, mussels in spicy tomato sauce, veal chop, giambotto, panna cotta.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $10.95-$24.95

Credit cards: A, M, V

Reservations: Recommended

Other: Valet parking

Carmine’s **

1043 N. Rush St.

312-988-7676

An Italian seafooder with a respectable selection of fresh fish and shellfish. But this corporate sibling to Rosebud and Centro has more fans for its straight Italian fare, including mountainous pastas. A nice restaurant to visit when it isn’t crowded; when the place is packed, the reservations system hits overload and you may be in for a long wait. The food isn’t fancy, but portions are large and prices fair.

Recommended: Baked clams, chocolate cake.

Open:. Dinner and lunch Mon.-Sun., breakfast Sat.-Sun.

Entree prices: $9.95-$34.95

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

Reservations: Strongly recommended

Noise: Conversation-challenged

Other: Wheelchair accessible; valet parking.

Coco Pazzo ***

300 W. Hubbard St.

312-836-0900

At one of the best Italian dining rooms in the city, the kitchen serves up brilliantly executed examples of hearty Tuscan cooking, characterized by big and bold flavors. The converted-loft dining space is similarly large and rough-hewn, though civilized touches — arty earth-and-sky centerpieces, white tablecloths, heavy velvet curtains — give the room a sophisticated air.

Recommended:. Chicken livers with polenta, duck-confit risotto, cheese and truffle-oil pizza, pancetta-wrapped pork, cicciolata fondante.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $13-$30

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Strongly recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Valet parking

Coco Pazzo Cafe **

636 N. St. Clair St.

312-664-2777

This step-sibling to Coco Pazzo is casual and very accessible, from its drop-by-anytime hours to its exceedingly modest prices. Charming rustic decor, enhanced by snappy service, is the perfect backdrop for the kitchen’s earthy Tuscan food. In pleasant weather, the open-air cafe is one of the city’s best.

Recommended: Carpaccio, pork chop.

Open:. Dinner and lunch Mon.-Sun.

Entree prices: $10.75-$20

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Accepted

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Wheelchair accessible; valet parking for dinner.

Corosh (2 forks)

1072 N. Milwaukee Ave.

773-235-0600

For those all-too-brief balmy days, Corosh offers one of the city’s best outdoor dining environments: a patio combining the best parts of a European cafe with the ambience of your neighbor’s back yard. Some of the Italian fare can be disappointing, but the pub offerings are reliably good.

Recommended: Louisiana (and other) burgers, fusilli Corosh.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Sat., brunch Sun.

Entree prices: $6-$20

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Accepted

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Francesca’s on Taylor **

1400 W. Taylor St.

312-829-2828

This Taylor Street Italian follows the same formula of uncomplicated food, good portions and reasonable prices as its siblings (Mia Francesca, et al), though it adds some civilized touches, such as better soundproofing and a reservations policy.

Recommended: Quattro stagione pizza, mushroom risotto, veal sassi, peach crumble.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $9.95-$22.95

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Strongly recommended

Noise: Conversation-challenged

Other: Wheelchair accessible; valet parking.

Gioco **

1312 S. Wabash Ave.

312-939-3870

Is the south-of-Roosevelt neighborhood about to become the next trendy restaurant district? Jerry Kleiner and Howard Davis, who helped pioneer the Randolph Street rebirth, are exploring the South Side with Gioco, a rustic Italian whose urban-distressed decor hints at the building’s past as a Prohibition-era speakeasy. The food is very good and service is surprisingly adept.

Recommended: Carpaccio mare e monti, smoked-salmon pizza, chicken Vesuvio, lemon tart, mascarpone mousse.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $10-$29

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Recommended

Noise: Conversation-challenged

Other: Valet parking lunch and dinner; wheelchair accessible.

La Donna **

5146 N. Clark St.

773-561-9400

Even if you’re dining alone, you’ll feel like part of a group here; closely spaced tables and a noticeable lack of empty seats make every dinner seem like a communal event. Even the generously portioned dishes seem to be prepared with groups in mind. For all the family-style atmosphere, however, the food is sophisticated as well as unfussy.

Recommended: Mixed seafood grill, ravioli, crocantino, Chocolate Decadence.

Open: Dinner and lunch Mon.-Sun., brunch Sat., Sun.

Entree prices: $7.95-$21.95

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

La Scarola (2 forks)

721 W. Grand Ave.

312-243-1740

Despite its low-key storefront setting, La Scarola draws its share of high-profile diners, including some of Chicago’s best-known chefs. Classic Italian dishes are well-executed and shockingly large.

Recommended: Duck, cannoli.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $8.95-$22.95

Credit cards:. A, DC, DS, M, V

Reservations: Accepted

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Wheelchair accessible

Lucca’s (3 forks)

2834 N. Southport Ave.

773-477-2565

The restaurant’s name, invoking the gastronomic flavors of Tuscany, is a compilation of the owners’ names, Michael Laconte and Thomas Talucci (who doubles as executive chef). But the menu goes well beyond Italian, wading convincingly into “world cuisine,” as evidenced by such menu ingredients as couscous, preserved lemons and ancho-pecan rice.

Recommended: Shiitake pancakes, filet mignon, baked apple.

Open: Dinner Tue.-Sun.

Entree prices: $12-$20

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Accepted

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Marco **

2360 N. Clybourn Ave.

773-348-2450

Recommended: Stuffed calamari, tomato terrine, wild-mushroom risotto, osso buco cremolata, tartufo affogato.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $12.95-$26.95

Credit cards: A, M, V

Reservations: Strongly

recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Valet parking; smoking at bar only; wheelchair accessible.

Mia Francesca *

3311 N. Clark St.

773-281-3310

Even midweek, count on long waits for a table, and a jam-packed, noisy dining room. The draw is Scott Harris’ thoughtful, moderately priced fare, characterized by hefty bruschettas, bounteous pastas and aggressively seasoned chicken.

Recommended: Quattro formaggi pizza, bruschetta, bowtie pasta, tonna aqua pazzo, roast chicken, apple crostada.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun.

Entree prices: $8.95-$24.95

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Not accepted

Noise: Conversation-challenged

Other: Valet parking

NEW Misto *

1118 W. Grand Ave.

312-226-5989

This West Side Italian gets its energy from Donny Greco, the back-slapping, joke-swapping occasional crooner who owns the place. As the name suggests, the menu is a mixture of culinary styles; what it lacks in coherency it makes up for in unpredictability.

Recommended: Risotto crab cakes, orange-glazed scallops, wild-mushroom rigatoni, cavatappi with grilled chicken, profiteroles.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $11-$24

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

Reservations: Recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Valet parking

NEW Pasta Diavalo (3 forks)

1448 N. Milwaukee Ave.

773-394-1812

This tiny, energetic Wicker Park cafe cooks up simple pastas and pizzas that rate with the best trendy white-tablecloth versions. The thin-crust 9-inch pizzas cook in an antique gas oven until crackling crisp and the pastas are generously portioned, fresh tasting and cooked to just the right tenderness.

Recommended: Caesar salad, penne pesto, tiramisu.

Open: Dinner Tue.-Sun., lunch Sat.

Entree prices: $6 to $10

Credit cards: M, V

Reservations: Not accepted

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: BYOB; no smoking; wheelchair accessible.

Primavera **

Fairmont Hotel

200 N. Columbus Drive

312-565-6655

Waiters in this comfortably plush dining room are all professional singers, who at regular intervals interrupt their food-service duties (ably handled by assistants) to belt out a song – anything from opera to Broadway to popular standards. The menu is less wide-ranging, sticking to well-executed, straightforward dishes. If you’re celebrating a birthday, the waiters will sing their signature version of “Happy Birthday” (to the tune of the Hallelujah Chorus).

Recommended: Prosciutto-wrapped shrimp, mixed-seafood grill, misto griglia, cannoli alla Primavera.

Open: Dinner, lunch and breakfast Mon.-Sun.

Entree prices: $14-$28

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

Reservations: Recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Wheelchair accessible

RL **

115 E. Chicago Ave.

312-475-1100

Ralph Lauren wanted a striking restaurant to pair with his Polo Ralph Lauren store, and he got it. The decor is luxuriously clubby, with deep-blue walls, fine wood accents and baby-soft leather seats; the food, contrary to Lauren’s American style, is rustic Italian, overseen by New York restaurateur Nino Esposito. Service is omnipresent and accommodating.

Recommended: Tagliata, wild-mushroom risotto, penne Sette Mezzo, chocolate mousse royale.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Sat.

Entree prices: $13-$32.

Credit cards: A, DC, M, V

Reservations: Recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Wheelchair accessible; no smoking in dining room.

NEW Spiaggia ****

980 N. Michigan Ave.

312-280-2750

World-class in virtually every respect, Spiaggia reigns as Chicago’s finest Italian restaurant. Chef Tony Mantuano oversees a menu that’s true to Italian simplicity but dazzles diners with outstanding ingredients and flawless preparation. Precise, professional service is extremely personable, and Henry Bishop’s literate and vast wine list could keep a wine-lover busy for hours. The tiered, platinum-and-white dining room is magnificent.

Recommended: Pancetta-wrapped rabbit, swordfish carpaccio, potato gnocchi, grilled squab, baba all’arancia.

Entree prices: $29-$38

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

Reservations: Strongly recommended

Noise: Conversation-friendly

Other: Jackets required; no smoking in dining room; wheelchair accessible.

Trattoria No. 10 **

10 N. Dearborn St.

312-984-1718

Its heart-of-the-Loop location, dramatically lit dining room and sophisticated food make this Italian mainstay a perfect place for a business lunch, intimate dinner or pre-theater meal. Doug D’Avico’s lengthy menu is highlighted by superb pastas, and ravioli is a particular strength. Service has its moments, but needs to be more consistent.

Recommended: Butternut squash ravioli, bowtie pasta, beef tenderloin, chocolate truffle cake.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sat., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $13.95-$26.95

Credit cards: A, DC, DS, M, V

Trattoria Parma **

400 N. Clark St.

312-245-9933

The rustic look seems to promise simple and reasonably priced food, and that’s what Trattoria Parma delivers, along with less familiar specials – notably the cacciucco, a fish stew available on Fridays. The user-friendly wine list is augmented by an award-winning reserve selection.

Recommended: Stuffed portobello mushroom, rigatoni stuffed with roast chicken, grilled lamb chops, panna cotta, cappuccino cheesecake.

Open: Dinner Mon.-Sun., lunch Mon.-Fri.

Entree prices: $9.95-$19.95

1732 N. Halsted St.

312-266-1199

Paul LoDuca cranks out robust regional Italian food that is uniformly delightful. The dining room is awash in faux finishes and trompe l’oeil effects, all aimed at creating a pleasing rusticity. Theater proximity is a plus.

Cucina Paradiso *

It’s a good option for a quick bite: Grab a seat and either order from the menu or help yourself to the parade of prepared dishes meandering by on the conveyor belt (dishes are color-coded to indicate price). Specials at lunch and dinner are essentially complete meals. No frills, but a good value.

Tsunami *

1160 N. Dearborn St.

312-642-9911

Except for the nine-seat sushi bar just off the entryway, this place looks like anything but a Japanese restaurant. Textured walls and faux finishes make up the decor, jazz and soul are the featured music and minimal lighting gives the main dining room a moody, nightclubby feel. But the menu is mostly straightforward Japanese, emphasizing sushi and sashimi, with the occasional French- and Italian-accented appetizer thrown in.

Recommended: Gyoza, combination sashimi, spider maki, sushi-sashimi dinner for two.
