I was dreading the summer heat and the power failures that inevitably come. Then something occurred to me: Before circuit breakers became commonplace, remember when you actually had to go into the basement and change the fuse? Remember that you had to turn off all non-essential appliances beforehand, otherwisewhen the power came back up, it would blow the fuse again?

Wouldn’t it be a good idea for ComEd or City Hall or someone to create a public-service message for those months of extreme heat and remind the general public of this fairly simple practice?
