Conventional wisdom has it that Sen. James Jeffords’ departure from the Republican Party is a defeat for the GOP and a victory for the Democrats. A more intriguing possibility, however, is that Sen. Jeffords’ move might lead to the formation of a centrist third party that would appeal to mainstream voters throughout the country while leaving Republicans and Democrats on the margins to the right and left.
