A player born in Ghana scored a goal Tuesday in a game in which he became the first African to play for Germany’s national team.

Gerald Asamoah scored in the 50th minute of a 2-0 exhibition victory over Slovakia.

Asamoah has lived in Germany for 12 years. He left the field in the 64th minute to a standing ovation from the crowd of 20,000 in Bremen, Germany.

“I thank God that my dream has been fulfilled,” he said. “It shows me it was the right decision to choose Germany.”

The 22-year-old forward has turned down numerous invitations to play for Ghana.

Big brother’s watching

Judges at amateur boxing’s world championships, which begin Sunday in Belfast, will be watched by cameras to see if they are cheating.

The same technology used at the Sydney Olympics will monitor the performance of the judges to make sure they are scoring correctly by hitting the right buttons.

“We are trying to clean up our act,” said competitions director Pat McCrory. “We do not want any contentious issues, no shenanigans, no squabbling over contest decisions.”

Say what?

`If the Twins are serious about staying in contention, they should consider Wells. The perfect spot for him may be in a state whose governor is Jesse Ventura.’
