In a May 20 letter, a reader named a lack of showers as an obstacle to bicycling for transportation. I have a few tips used by thousands in Chicagoland:

– Carry a change of clothes, or keep clean clothes at your destination. When you arrive, towel off in the washroom, and change into your fresh clothes.

– Allow more travel time so you can bicycle more slowly.

– Bicycle to the train station or bus stop, lock your bike and use transit for the rest of your trip.

An estimated 80 percent of Americans who bike-commute don’t shower at their destinations. No, they’re not getting fired or offending their coworkers. They use tips like the ones above to feel fresh and clean after their rides.
