A Shelby County man died Wednesday when his single-engine Piper airplane crashed outside West Lafayette, police said.

Charles D. Glackman, 31, of Fairland died of massive head trauma and other internal injuries, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department said.

The plane was found Wednesday morning in woods near a subdivision that is under construction.

Glackman was the only person on board.

Authorities estimated that the plane crashed about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff’s officers investigating vandalism at a nearby church saw the plane fly overhead about 250 feet off the ground. A three-hour search did not turn up the craft, but a construction worker saw it about 7 a.m. and called police.

The plane, built in 1965, was registered to Indy Aero Inc. in Greenfield.
