I am struck by a number of ironies in M. Vanderzee’s letter.
First, why would a pro-life float offend?
Just what is so offensive about affirming life?
Second, why would a parade “meant to represent the community” exclude Christians? Are Christians not a part of the Evanston community?
Third, why would parents feel uncomfortable discussing the issue?
Perhaps such a discussion would result in parents evaluating and articulating their own beliefs to their children.
Finally, what better way to promote a “family parade” than by including a float filled with parents and children?
In these condemnations and in accusations of “Evanston’s apparent right-wing views,” M. Vanderzee seems guilty of the very narrow-mindedness he/she probably despises.
