Event: Annual “What’s Under Foot” birdhouse auction, at Barneys New York, Chicago. To benefit: The Chicago House, which runs programs for people with HIV/AIDS. Flocking to the event: A record 300 people shopping for clothes and birdhouses. Do we have a bid? The largest sum ever raised at auction and via ticket sales: $28,000. For Big Bird, perhaps? Of the 50-plus birdhouses, the largest was 6 feet by 7 feet and made of old barn siding and grapevines. Going, going, not quite gone: The top bidders on the big birdhouse, the E.T. Petrakises, donated it back to Chicago House.
