I was so angry after reading the first sentence of “Summer months are lean times for needy” (Page 1, July 18), I barely was able to finish the article.
It read: “Mary Bell, a grandmother responsible for feeding nine children, waited two hours Tuesday in sticky weather for a few bags of free produce . . .”
First, the author went for sappy emotionalism.
Second, where are the parents?
This grandmother, who is having to care for and/or adopt her children’s children, is indicative of our deteriorating culture.
There are nine children she cares for.
If you allow two working adults per three children (and I’m assuming these adults are able-bodied enough to work; after all, they were able-bodied enough to create life), you have six working adults.
If each adult contributed $12.50 per week, that would be a total of $300 per month for the grandmother to spend on food for these children. But that would be putting responsibility where it belongs, which is to those who created the lives.
You want to talk lean times?
Lean times will be when these children have children, and there won’t be a grandma around to adopt them.
